It looks more and more likely that the new v2 iPhone will be announced on 9th June.

The main upgrade to the iPhone is going to be the inclusion of a 3G chip.

Rumours of an onboard GPS chip are also circulating around the web.

Apple have been out of stock of the current iPhone for over a week now, and O2/Carphone warehouse have been without stock for over 2 weeks.

The new iPhone should come with the new firmware (v2).

And the biggest question I'm being asked is 'can it run with any sim card ?'

Again, rumour has it that the new iPhone may be sold subsidised at a discounted rate (subject to taking out a specific tarriff) and also it may be sold unlocked to work on any network ? If not, the hacking community will be on the case very quickly with the relevant modifications to make it work on any network.
